Demi Lune Japanned Tin Tole 3 Candle Portable Lantern 19th Century

This very attractive, most unusual portable lantern, holds 3 candles inside which are accessed by a door on the back. The front is one large glass pane. "The semi-circular back, which is of bright tin to act as a reflector, has a small door in the centre through which the candles may be lighted and snuffed. The outside is japanned and provided with a stout handle and a ventilator in the top to let the smoke and hot air to escape. This lantern may have been used to light a store or illuminate a showcase or window."
