On a recent vacation to Los Angeles we were fortunate enough to meet an antiques dealer who purchases large quantities of props from movie studios, furnishings and decorator items from hotel, restaurant and theatre chains etc. We bought several hand painted works of art which were commissioned in the 1950's for a restaurant chain in Los Angeles known as Claim Jumpers. When the original owner died his widow decided to sell the restaurants and their contents.
This piece has beautiful rich colours showing the well dressed man in 1900. This sign has surface wear which suggests it was attached outside in a covered porch perhaps. There is a small dimple on the left cheek which does not detract from the overall impact of this unique piece. Our guess is that Stutsman & Keene were haberdashers in Los Angeles in the late 19th century.
This sign measures 2' by 4'9".
