Early Native Inspired Carved Cedar Folk Art Mask

Picked in Northern Ontario from a family that found this mask in the woods near Corbeil Ontario in the 1960's. Carved of cedar, and retaining it's original polychrome painted surface, this carved cedar mask has significant age, and likely dates from the late 19th century. While I don't believe it's native made, the design was certainly created by someone who had a knowledge of native design, and so I feel it's more a folk art interpretation of a native mask whose mysterious purpose leads more to whimsy or decoration.
