AN ENGLISH WATERCOLOUR TITLED & SIGNED BY THE ARTIST LOWER RIGHT “ON BASSENTHWAITE” & “E. A. KRAUSE” {EMIL ALEX KRAUSE, RCA (ROYAL CAMBRIAN SOCIETY) 1867-1945}.

FRAMED UNDER GLASS IN A DARKLY GILDED & EMBOSSED WOODEN FRAME WITH AN OFF-WHITE MATTE OVER A GILT PAINTED INNER BORDER.  APPROX. SIGHT SIZE IN INCHES: 13 ¾” W. x 9 ½” H. FRAMED: 23 ¾” x 19 ¾”. C. 1895. FRAME IS LATER.

THE ARTIST WAS BORN IN BERLIN BUT EMIGRATED TO ENGLAND WITH HIS FAMILY IN 1881. EARLY IN HIS CAREER HE FOCUSED ON THE WELSH COUNTRYSIDE & THE LAKES DISTRICT BUT WHEN OLDER CONCENTRATED ON THE SCOTTISH COASTAL REGIONS. HIS WORK IS HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER AND IS FOUND IN MANY MAJOR COLLECTIONS.

BASSENTHWAITE LAKE IS THE ONLY BODY OF WATER IN THE ENGLISH LAKES DISTRICT TO BE CALLED A LAKE. THE OTHERS ARE “WATERS” OR “TARNS”. AT 4 MILES LONG & ¾ MI. WIDE IT’S THE LARGEST BODY OF WATER IN THE DISTRICT BUT VERY SHALLOW AT A MAXIMUM DEPTH OF ONLY 70 FEET.
