This tin hat comes from Fredricton, New Brunswick. We purchased it from a collector 25 years ago. In the late 19th and early 20th century it was a custom to present something made of tin for the tenth wedding anniversary. This gave tinsmiths the opportunity to show off their skill outside the normal everyday work. This hat is one such item. If you are interested - Goggle "images for anniversary tin antiques" - and you will see a wide range of works.
The detail on this hat is very good and shows superior work. The tinsmith even included a paper "sweat band" inside for authenticity. It has hung in our house for many years - now looking for a new home.
A great folk art piece.
The top is 9 1/2" in diameter.
