EARLY IRON SUFFOLK LATCH
A Suffolk door latch found in Massachusetts. Upper & lower lima bean-shaped cusps. Flat, ovate thumb press with straight, short-lift & pin joint which passes through a raised, arrow-shaped opening. A rounded grasp with 3 incised lines at centre.
Suffolk latches take their name from the English area where they first originated. They differ from Norfolk latches by having no backplate. Dates 1800-1840’s and then fell out of favour when Blake’s Patent latch took over the market. Measures approx.. 6.625 inches long.
