BRONZE HORSE CAR/RAILWAY BELL
Perhaps of interest to collectors of railway memorabilia this Victorian era horse car bell is in great condition & complete with its leather strap, clapper and an unusual feature, a Germanic-type hand-carved wooden lollipop. Standing about 4 inches high without the strap it’s in great condition, completely intact and with a wonderful aged patina.
I’m told that this was used on the Berlin (now called Kitchener) and Waterloo Street Railway Co. which was incorporated in 1886.The bells were attached to the horses’ harness to warn citizens of the trolleys’ approach. By the end of the century most horse car lines in America had been converted to electric operations.
